The Conceptual Design of a Constellation Class Starship
Posted by ninx on Tuesday, January 04 @ 21:42:53 PST

A Guest writes "You are invited to read my Ph.D dissertation at the University of Texas at Austin Department of Aerospace Engineering, called "The Conceptual Design of a Constellation Class Starship." It is now available as an ebook or as an bound 8.5 x 11 volume at:

LuLu.Com

The ebook is FREE and the 225 page document is only $9.30.

There is an excerpt at this website, outlining the Starship design. The rest of the dissertation is devoted to more engineering applications, and to developing a solid theoretical basis for everything. All the theory is based on the famous Three Body Problem of Celestial Mechanics; so this is not a fantasy or scifi project. Indeed, there is lots of math in the project, but also 150+ lavish illustrations that make the whole thing easy to follow and understand.

Bacterial Integrated Circuits
Posted by ninx on Friday, June 11 @ 18:14:31 PDT

By interfacing bacteria to silicon chips, NASA-supported researchers have created a device that can sense almost anything.
June 10, 2004: Like a canary in a mine, a microbe can often sense environmental dangers before a human can. It's easy to see a canary's reaction. But how can you can you tell what a microbe's feeling? How can you coax a microbe to communicate?
