Prove it, Holden

Holden will host the 2001 Formula SAE competition at its Proving Ground on 7 - 9 December this year.

The Formula SAE competition is organised by the Society of Automotive Engineers-Australasia (SAE-A) and is based on a similar, long established US competition.

The concept behind the competition is that student engineers from universities and institutions from around Australia conceive, design, fabricate and compete with small formula style racing cars.

The process is designed to give student engineers hands-on involvement in a meaningful engineering project and assist in skills development in the areas
of teamwork, producing cost effective designs and meeting deadlines.

In line with competition rules, student teams must produce a prototype car for the non professional weekend autocross racer. The cars are judged in three different categories: static inspection and engineering design, solo performance trials and high performance track endurance. Judges award points
in several different categories including presentation, engineering design and cost analysis.

This year Holden, Ford, Toyota and Mitsubishi are the consortium sponsors for the event, which had its inaugural year in 2000. Entries from international
teams from the US and United Kingdom are also expected.

It is anticipated that this year's event at the Holden Proving Ground will attract up to 1,000 visitors and participants each day over the three day period.

Teams taking part in the competition this year are representing the following
universities:

· Melbourne University/Kangain Batman TAFE
· Swinburne University/Swinburne TAFE
· Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology/RMIT TAFE
· University of NSW/South Western Institute of Technology
· Monash University
· University of Technology Sydney
· Deakin University
· University of Adelaide
· University of Wollongong
· University of Sydney
· Australian National University/Canberra Institute of Technology
· Victoria University of Technology/VUT TAFE
· University of Western Australia · University of Queensland
· University of Tasmania.
